OFFICER’S HAVERSACK
This is a very large and handsome
haversack, copied from an original in the
Museum of the Confederacy in
Richmond, Virginia.
The original was purchased by Captain C. J. Netherland, 2nd
Regiment Virginia Militia, from the Richmond
Arsenal in 1864.
The bag is made of oil cloth trimmed in tan piping. It is fully
lined in 6 oz. drill. The adjustable leather shoulder strap is 45
inches long. The bag measures 13” wide and is 10” deep. The
original example of this bag is also shown in “Echoes of Glory”

the

Copied from
an original in the collections of the National Civil War Museum in
Harrisburg, PA. Haversack measures 11 ˝ X 12 inches, leather strap
with correct iron roller buckle is 48 inches long. Haversack is made of
oilcloth, like the original with black tape edging. Bag has large fully lined
inner pocket, with two additional pockets on outside of main pouch.
Small pocket closed with eagle staff button on outer flap.

this replica is in the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. I have personally examined and made detailed drawings so this is a truly
faithful reproduction.
The original was used by Sgt A. H. Bayley, Co D. (Peyton’s Artillery)
18th Virginia Artillery Battalion.
This haversack is made of oil cloth with a separate, but not removable,
liner of cotton drill. It measures 12 by 12 inches with a cotton duck
shoulder strap 40 inches long.
It is almost entirely hand sewn.

Quartermaster
Museum Haversack
This is an exact
copy of an original haversack in the collections of the U.S. Army
Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee, Virginia.
Haversack is 11 1/2 inches wide; 11 1/2 inches long with a 45 inch
shoulder strap. This haversack has all interior seams flat felled (most
repro haversacks sold by sutlers have raw seams inside). Has correct steel
roller buckle and a real linseed oil finish over black paint. Liner bag is
of drill with three hand worked button holes. It is marked identically to
the original:

This replica is based upon
detailed drawings received from the West Point Museum. It differs from
the QM Museum haversack in that its bag is a single piece construction
with side seams.
It measures 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches. The strap is 46 inches long. This
has hand sewing inside the flap as shown on the original drawings. All
interior seams flat felled. Liner bag is of cotton drill with three hand
worked button holes.
